Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of damage or more AD or even more affixes.

Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is outclassed by Rare-grade gear due to their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a kind of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They boost the performance of the item that they're connected to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged by using a specialist or higher salvage kit to salvage upgrades from the items.

The amount of damage a piece of armor or weapon can absorb depends on the degree of upgrades. The ability to absorb damage of an armor piece will increase when it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it must be heavier.

There are a variety of armor upgrade available in the game. Each one has a distinct effect. Certain upgrades give armor an additional amount of health points while others make it more powerful and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade the item upgrading can receive, as shown below.

Some of the upgrades are also magic or a mix of technology and magic, which is indicated by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Certain upgrades require charges in order to be used. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with another jewel of the same type without damaging the original one. You can only replace the gem only once in a piece of equipment.

It is typical to use more jewelry for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and create a surface harder than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not cause damage to the movement.

In addition to the above upgrades, the player can also acquire glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These provide a small bonus and can be swapped out at any time however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded at the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be removed from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. The first trinkets a player unlocks will be the cloak. It grants an unimportant but beneficial boost to movement speed and evasion. The player can then acquire necklaces, amulets, and rings in a similar fashion similar to how they obtained weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero isn't in combat. This allows the hero to be more efficient while inactive. It also helps compensate for the lack of a strong slot in the talent tree or team which are usually filled by the hero's Best item upgrade stats.

In general trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best in Slot) items that you will not replace soon. Also, consider items with desirable statistics that aren't as significant as the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item upgrade has multiple stats that you wish to upgrade, as it's usually better to upgrade just one crucial stat than two subpar ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one at the beginning of the game. Mid and top players however they will select a green or a pink ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices can impact the ability of a hero to control the map.
