World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like crit chance and PvE Damage.

Components

Upgrade components are only available to equipment with a slot. The item upgrades must be upgraded to blue before a component can be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or Ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. Leveling

The upgrade system of items allows players to boost the power of certain items by introducing upgraded components. This is commonly known as "upping". Each upgradeable item is assigned a level which determines the final statistics. Upgraded items can be upgraded up to a maximum of 385. Each level of an item requires various components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or on the upgrade tab of crafting tables. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed earns several Technology Points. These points can be used for leveling up an item. When enough points have been earned you will be able to claim the upgrade and receive its additional bonuses.

When a player upgrade the equipment they have the original item will be replaced by the new item. The same armor will receive an weapon or shield when upgraded. The item also loses any bonuses it earned, such as the chance to crit attack damage, other effects (such as an increase in healing over time or reloading speed). However, the player may still continue to use the weapon or armor following the failure.

If an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from the lowest to the highest. This means that when a weapon is upgraded, if it increases its crit chance it will be applied prior to any damage from attacks increases.
