Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

baby-crib-grey-1658.jpgBedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to rest with their baby at night without fear of SIDS. However they are only recommended for use up to 6 months when your baby is required to be moved into a cot, or a moses basket.

MFM home tester Mehack was impressed that this model comes with an adjustable bassinet that you can use around the house and an option to rock manually. It was also easy to put together and came in its own travel cot bedside bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However cots are generally intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots, large and standard that can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. Selecting the larger of the two is a good choice when you want your child to sleep in it until the age of at least three years old.

Jasmine is an MFM mother who tested the product at home, said she liked that it was a bit bigger than the typical Moses' basket but still not too big for the room of her baby. She says it's easy to get her baby in and out for feeding or calming and that the quality is great, compared with many she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.

Emily who is a home tester, is awed by the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi lora that is a portable, lift-off bassinet. It also is a rock. It also comes with an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable liner that is breathable. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. Contrary to some International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase a new mattress as your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). Here's the ideal mattress for your cot.

Height

When choosing a bedside cot choose one that can be raised to a height that's comfortable for you when feeding babies. It must also be lower out of the way, so you can raise your baby towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This is particularly useful when you are recovering from a C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is how low you want the base of your cot to be. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their babies from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level, while others prefer a higher height to give them greater stability. One of our testers for mums mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It has an easy-to-fold side that you can press at the press of one button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet or bedside sleeping device should only be used when your baby can hold his head up without assistance, which is usually about 6 months old. This is due to the possibility of being suffocated. Be aware that when your child is old enough to turn an existing bedside or bassinet into a cot, you will need to remove the sides when they are ready to do so. This will prevent them from climbing out or falling out of bed.

Design

There are many styles of cribs for bedside use, ranging from basic to extravagant. The most luxurious models could include features like an integrated night light or a soothing center that plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibrating to help soothe your baby to sleep, or a swivelling base that allows you to easily reach your baby for feedings. Certain models can be converted into a toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

For instance, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the best bedside cot Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is great for new mums recovering from Caesarean births or who have to remain in bed for long periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying that it was easy to use and made her baby much more manageable - especially after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&baby bedside co sleeper Awards to be the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's slightly larger than other cribs for bed we've tested but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mum home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib travel cot crib, describing how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. 'It has an excellent design that is extremely simple to operate and is extremely durable. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing because it allows you to move the bassinet from side to side, and one of its sides can be lowered down to make access easier especially for mothers who are recovering from their C-sections', she said.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety feature is that it is able to be moved up or down so that parents can reach their baby to feed, comfort or change his or her diaper. This makes it perfect for new mothers recovering from a C-section. It is recommended to choose the design that lets you lower the bed's side with a single button press. This will allow you to easily lift your child up without having to get out of bed. This is important, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. It is also important to not add anything to the crib that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, like duvets and pillows, which can cause babies to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues that include gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC examined the possibility of imposing additional requirements for bedside sleepers, such as the requirement that they meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at a minimum, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not feasible or large bedside cot effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants are trapped by a bedside rail and an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that can be converted to other modes such as bassinets and play yards. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multiuse bedside sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that can be permanently connected or disconnected when the item is not being used as the bassinet.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will take into account these comments when it votes on the final rule, which is expected to come out in November 2021.
