Lolita's Personality

They need to spend at least two to three hours each day in the outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. In addition to being a fun pet they also make wonderful pets for children.

Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can cause a disturbance to those who live near. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud cries which could be disruptive for those who live in apartments or condos.

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are difficult to distinguish. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable method to determine the sex. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. Lolita's Care

They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member and plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean, not a concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild.
