The nasopharynx is the very top part of your throat, right behind your nose and above the soft part of the roof of your mouth. This area connects your nose to the rest of your throat and is important for breathing and for getting rid of mucus. Examination of the nasopharynx is typically performed using a flexible endoscope that is gently inserted through one of the nasal passages. This allows the doctor to visualize the posterior aspect of your nasal cavity, the adenoids (in children), and the openings of the Eustachian tubes. If you often have a stuffy nose, get nosebleeds a lot, or have ongoing ear problems, we might need to examine your nasopharynx.

If a direct laryngoscopy is needed, you'll be given general anesthesia, meaning you'll be asleep throughout the entire process. It's typically performed in a hospital or surgical center. The doctor will use the laryngoscope to carefully open your airway and get a direct view of your larynx. If we need to take any tissue samples (biopsies) or remove any small growths, we can do that during the procedure as well. We'll keep a close eye on you while you're asleep and as you wake up in the recovery room.

The initial step usually involves a careful visual inspection of your mouth and throat. Using a light source and sometimes a tongue depressor, your doctor will examine your tonsils, uvula, and the back of your throat (pharynx).

Standard Throat Evaluations

With flexible laryngoscopy, we use a slender, bendable tube equipped with a camera and light. This approach allows the doctor to visualize the larynx and upper throat by passing the flexible tube through the nasal passages. This is usually done in our office, and we'll use a numbing spray in your nose to make it more comfortable. Flexible laryngoscopy is great for evaluating swallowing problems, vocal cord movement, and other dynamic functions of the throat.

If you're having an indirect pharyngoscopy, you'll probably just sit comfortably in a chair in our office. Your doctor might spray a local anesthetic in your throat to help reduce any gag reflex. Next, your doctor will carefully put the small mirror into your mouth and use the light from their headlight to get a good view of the back of your throat. We might ask you to say "ahhh" or stick out your tongue to help us get a better look at different parts of your pharynx. This is usually a quick procedure, often lasting only a few minutes, and while it's not typically painful, you might feel some pressure or a mild tickling sensation.

Depending on what's going on and what we find initially, we might use other tools to help us get more information during your throat exam. These might include nasopharyngoscopy (a flexible scope to examine the nasal passages and upper throat), stroboscopy (a specialized light to evaluate vocal cord vibration), or imaging studies such as X-rays or CT scans.
